Solutions for Dreamers is a Santa Barbara, California based movement of eco-friendly visual and recording artists, non profit organizations and sustainable-business advocates. Dozens of musicians have donated song tracks to Solutions for Dreamers compilation albums benefiting non-profit organizations such as Heal the Ocean and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The movement was conceived in 2001, with recording artist Jack Johnson as its earliest patron and advocate. An eco-festival was held on February 24, 2007 with a benefit concert at the Arlington Theatre, coinciding with the release of Solutions for Dreamers: Season 2.[1] Benefiting the WFP, Solutions for Dreamers: Season 3 features an exclusive recording of Duane Stephenson with The Wailers, "A Step for Mankind" (2010).[2]

Background

Discussions for Solutions for Dreamers began in 2001; the creative team of Jacob Tell, Sean Campos, and Mike Wald found commonality with Jack Johnson's ocean-centric ecological message. Oniracom, a Santa Barbara-based, Internet creative agency,[3] was founded to advance the sustainable-living movement's message.[1] Similar Jack Johnson efforts to combine creative and performance art with the ecological message include: Kim and Jack Johnson's,[4] Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, the Kōkua Hawaii Foundation,[5] and Earth day festivals with the Community Environment Council.[6] The creative team assisted with event planning and logistics for Jack Johnson's Kōkua Festivals from 2004 through 2010, and Oniracom's environmental charter has attracted sustainable-living aware clients such as: Supertramp,[7] Lenny Kravitz, Counting Crows and Matisyahu.[3]

Eco-festival

Solutions for Dreamers Festival, was an all day, eco-festival, held in Santa Barbara, California, on February 24, 2007, raising awareness for eco-centric initiatives such as: the detrimental effect of sonar on marine mammals, specifically whales, ocean pollution and the proposed Cabrillo Port LNG Project, a liquefied natural gas seaport, which would have been moored off of the Southern California shore.[8][9]

The festival coincided with the release of the Solutions for Dreamers: Season 2 compilation album, and the evening concert at the Arlington Theatre headlined with Michael Franti & Spearhead, and included the art, music and life-sized puppetry of Matthew McAvene.[1]

Jack Johnson was not on the marque, but made the red-eye flight in from Hawaii.[10] Johnson sat in with Michael Franti & Spearhead, Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) and Culver City Dub Collective. Local artist, Danny Riley got a taste of performing in a big room before his passing later that year, sitting in with Matthew McAvene.[10][11]

Dyson Sphere was also on the marque and their set included a documentary film by Nils Larson, Beneath The Waves, emphasizing the sonar that disorients marine mammals.[8] The festival was devoid of lectures, preferring instead to leave educational-awareness to non-profit and eco-friendly organizations, delivering their message on a conversational basis from information booths.[12]

The festival benefited Heal the Ocean, a non-profit focusing on ocean related policy issues.[13] Heal the Ocean co-founder, Hillary Hauser, is a classical pianist[14] and ocean genre author,[15] she wrote a feature article, "Shipwrecked with Jeff Johnson by Hillary Hauser" (2000) for The Surfer's Journal.[16] Jeff Johnson (1943-2009), a professional surfer and ecology advocate, was Jack Johnson's father. The surfing and scuba diving ecology activists were both present at the event.

Season 1

Solutions for Dreamers: Season 1 (2005), was an exploratory effort, primarily showcasing Santa Barbara artists with a 22 track collection of songs. Sponsored by a now discontinued producer of eco-friendly shoes, Decker's Simple Shoes,[17] Oniracom founded Oniric Records in 2004,[18] and Solutions for Dreamers: Season 1 was released in 2005.[1]
